It indicates the printer’s formatter or fuser unit has encountered a fault during data processing. Error 49 on Brother laser printers signals a fuser error or a print process overrun. The fuser unit is the component that bonds toner to paper using heat and pressure. Error 49 appears when the fuser unit’s temperature sensor detects an anomaly, when the fuser fails to reach operating temperature, or when the data formatter is unable to process the print data stream correctly. Check the area around and through the fuser for any paper fragments, small jammed pieces, or debris that could be interfering with the thermal sensors. Remove any foreign material carefully with the printer powered off and the fuser cooled down.
On some Brother models, performing a factory reset clears persistent Error 49 states caused by corrupted firmware memory. Access Reset via Menu > Initial Setup > Reset > Factory Reset. Note that this clears all network and custom settings — document them first.
If Error 49 returns immediately after a power cycle and power cycling multiple times does not help, the fuser unit has likely failed and requires replacement. Contact Brother Support with your printer’s model and serial number to arrange a fuser replacement or warranty service.
