If your LG Washer is showing error code CE, the machine has detected an overcurrent condition in the motor drive circuit. Error CE means the control board measured more electrical current flowing through the motor than is considered safe for normal operation. Here is how to diagnose and fix LG Washer error CE.
Error CE stands for Current Error. The LG Washer’s inverter drive board monitors the electrical current flowing to the direct drive motor during operation. If the current exceeds the maximum rated threshold — which can happen if the motor is stalled, mechanically obstructed, or has a winding fault — the board triggers error CE and shuts down the motor to prevent damage to the motor windings and the drive board itself.
CE is an electrical protection fault. Unlike mechanical errors such as UE or LE, CE points directly to the motor circuit and should be taken seriously, especially if it appears on a light load or during normal operation.
Follow the steps below one at a time — many error codes can be fixed faster than they look.
If CE appeared during a heavy cycle, press Power to stop the machine and open the door. Remove at least half the load. Close the door and restart the cycle. If CE was caused purely by overloading, it will not return on the lighter load. Always wash heavy items like duvets, towels, or large rugs in smaller batches.
Empty the drum and run it empty on a short cycle. Listen for grinding or resistance. If the drum does not turn smoothly by hand when the machine is unplugged, a foreign object may be jammed between the drum and the outer tub. On front-load models, access the drum gap via the door seal area or by removing the rear panel to inspect the drum gap with a torch. Remove any obstructions found.
Unplug the washer. On front-load LG Washers, the direct drive motor is mounted at the rear of the outer drum and is accessed by removing the rear panel (usually 6–8 screws). Disconnect the motor’s main wiring connector and inspect the pins for corrosion, bent contacts, or loose fit. Reconnect firmly. Also trace the wiring harness from the motor to the inverter board and check for damage along its length.
With the motor disconnected from the harness, use a multimeter to test the motor windings. Set the meter to resistance (ohms) and test between each pair of motor terminals. All three phase winding readings should be approximately equal (typically 4–8 ohms depending on the model). A reading of 0 ohms (short circuit) or infinite ohms (open circuit) on any winding indicates a faulty motor that needs replacement.
If the motor tests good but CE persists, the inverter drive board (also called the motor control board) may be faulty. This board is separate from the main control board on many LG Washer models and is mounted near the motor at the rear. Visually inspect it for burnt components, swollen capacitors, or scorch marks. If damage is visible or all other components have tested good, the inverter board should be replaced.
After resolving the cause, unplug the washer for 15–30 minutes. This is longer than most LG error resets because CE involves the inverter drive board’s current monitoring logic. Plug back in, run an empty test cycle on a short program, and verify that CE does not return. If CE appears on an empty drum, the motor or inverter board fault has not been resolved.
